The Amalfi Coast is probably Italy’s most beautiful coastline. The Amalfi Coast is a stunning combination of sea, picturesque coastal towns and mountains, an abundance of both culture and nature. The landscape of the Amalfi coast is immensely varied and surrounded by infinite ever changing views. It can be typical Mediterranean, intoxicated by wild perfumed herbs, with myrtle shrubs, thyme, rosemary and mastic trees, or almost alpine with meadows and bare rocks. And there’s cultural heritage abound! Man has created a mosaic terraced landscape, which nothing can compare with. And beautiful little churches, ruins of castles and old farmhouses are found all over… The Amalfi Coast is definitely Europe’s most scenic and dramatic stretch of coastline! And the best thing is, everything can be discovered on foot!
There are thousands of footpaths on the Amalfi coast, some which are famous such as the “Sentiero degli Dei”- the “Pathway of the Gods” – or are at least a thousand years old, like the “Maestra dei Villaggi” – the ‘main road’ of the Republic of Amalfi. But also those less known are just as beautiful! Going from the sea to the mountains or vice versa, there are always stupendous views, and you’ll walk through little villages, vineyards and olive groves, Mediterranean scrubs and woods, living rocks and chestnut woods.
A large part of this tour is along the coast, and of course it touches all the famous coastal villages, which are a must to see: Amalfi itself, but also Atrani, Ravello, Praiano and of course the scenic Positano. But you will walk as well through real mountainous scenery, along amazing sheer drops, through chestnut forests and attractive countryside, with wonderful terraced lemon groves, vineyards. And along cultural treasures like rural chapels, ancient farm houses, old water and once in a while a herd of goats on your path. To walk in this area you will enjoy some of the most splendid views of the Amalfi Coast and the Bay of Naples, while being immersed in an almost Alpine landscape. You will also surely enjoy the rural scenery, which make you feel far away from the glitter of some of the fashionable places along the coast.
This tour shows you the paths most guides don’t know about and most books don’t write about! You will discover that the with reason the Amalfi Coast has become Italy’s most famous coastline, but as well that there are still places to be by yourself, surrounded by nature.
Please note: this is a moderately easy tour which is suitable for those who have some experience with walking and a good general physical condition. Most of the walks are on good paths, some of them just recently restored by the local authorities. Part of the paths is waymarked. Elsewhere it is necessary to follow the route notes provided together with the maps.

DAY–TO–DAY PROGRAMME (EXTRA DAYS IN GRAGNANO)
N.B. In order to get a taste of the trails of the Amalfi Coast, before they became immensely popular, we strongly recommend to book two days in Gragnano, before walking on to Agerola. Here you can still walk some beautiful trails without the crowds you now often find along the Amalfi Coast (see description below).
Day 1 – Arrival in Gragnano
Arrival in Naples. You are met by a taxi (optional) and brought to your hotel/B&B in the heart of the historical centre of Gragnano, the birthplace of the Italian past, located at the feet of the Lattari Mountains, overlooking the Bay of Naples. If you arrive early you can already make a stroll through the old town, or visit the pasta museum.
Day 2 – Medieval villages & pasta mills of Gragnano
For today you have a few options, according to your own interest. Today’s walk brings you from the centre to the medieval hamlets belonging to the city of Gragnano. This area was the most northern outpost of the medieval Republic of Amalfi , reason why there are a number of fortresses and castles in the area. After strolling through the Hamlet of Caprile, you’ll walk up a site valley along a stunning medieval acqueduct. You then have the chance to walk up further into the mountains, which, although close to the city, offers an absolutely wild scenery, between forests and steep canyons. Either way, you’ll return to the small hamlet of Castello, worth a visit for its church and castle. Then you descend into the stunning ‘Valle dei Mulini’, the valley where the first watermills grinded flour, for what has become over the centuries, the Italian trademark, the pasta! Still today all over Italy the pasta from Gragnano is reputed one of the best, and still today there are a few factories producing pasta the traditional way. After dwelling through this romantic area, with now most mills overgrown by the vegetation, you return to the city. At dinner of course you’ll have some great pasta!

Day 3 – Along the route of the Amalfi knights to the village of Agerola
Today’s walk brings you from the northern site of the Lattari mountains, over the ridge to the highplain of Agerola on the southern side, overlooking the Amalfi Coast. First you walk up to once of the most intriguing strongholds of the Amalfitan republic, the fortified church of Pino, located in an amazingly scenic position, with great views over the Bay of Naples and the highest peaks of the Amalfi Coast. Through chestnut forest and along a few natural springs, you then reach the ridge, from where views open up to the southern part. A relaxed stroll, first through the forest, then to a pretty rural landscape, brings you down to the charming little village of Bomerano. If you arrive early you can have a drink in the square or walk a short stretch of the world-famous ‘Footpath of the Gods’ to take in some more spectacular views. Along an easy road, you then walk to your agriturismo.
Total walking distance: 14 km. Approx. walking time: 5,5 h. Ascent & descent: +800 m./- 300 m. (several extensions possible)

DAY–TO–DAY PROGRAMME
Day 1
Arrival in Naples. You are met by a taxi (optional) and brought to your quiet agriturismo in the charming little village of Agerola, beautifully located, high above the Amalfi Coast, overlooking the Bay of Salerno. If you arrive early you can walk a short stretch of the world-famous ‘Footpath of the Gods’, to take in the first spectacular views.

Day 2
Today’s walk brings you towards the highest peaks of the Amalfi Coast, from where views are perhaps even more beautiful than from the famed ‘Sentiero degli Dei’. The first part of the walk is a relaxed stroll through the charming village of Bomerano, but then, through vineyards and chestnut forest, the path starts to climb. After about an hour walking uphill you reach the ridge of the Monte Tre Calli, from where views are at 360 degrees. Along the ridge you then walk to a natural rock formation known as the ‘mushroom’, from where you have to face a choice: you might continue the climb to the Monte Sant’Angelo, otherwise you can opt for a relaxed picnic lunch. Then you start the descent then towards the little chapel of the ‘Virgin of the Silence’, from where views on Positano are grand to say the least. Along an easy road you then walk back from there to your agriturismo.
Agriturismo*** – Agerola (Bomerano or San Lazzaro)
Distance: 9 km. Approx. 4,5 h. walking. Ascent & descent: +/- 430 m. (several extensions possible)
Day 3
From Bomerano you walk down into the green Praia valley, a wonderful landscape of sheer mountain cliffs and terraced vineyards. Along recently restored footpaths you reach the grotto of St. Barbara, where some medieval fresco’s can still be found. Then, along the chapel of St. Alfonso you reach the small hamlet of Furore. The route then descends into the spectacular fjord of Furore, with its towering limestone cliffs. You reach the village of San Lazzaro, where you can enjoy a coffee or a drink, and admire one of the most wonderful panoramas of the whole Amalfi Coast. From here you continue your walk downhill, now along one of the oldest pathways of the Amalfi Maritime Republic, the ‘Maestra dei Villaggi’, or ‘Highway of the Villages’, an old paved mule track dating back to the 9th century. You pass the hamlet of Tovere, pass above the imposing monastery of Santa Rosa and then reach the small hamlet village of Vettica Minore. From here you have the option to either continue on foot to Amalfi, passing through the medieval villages of Lone and Pastena, both beautifully located above the rocky shore, or to walk down to the beach at Santa Croce and then make the short transfer to Amalfi by local boat.

Distance: 11 km. Approx. 4,5 h. walking. Ascent & descent: + 200 m./- 830 m.
Day 4
Today you can either walk or take the local bus to the charming historic village of Ravello, a highlight of the Amalfi Coast. We recommend walking the first very scenic stretch to the beautiful little town of Atrani, with great views of the town centre. Atrani is probably the best-preserved town on the Amalfi Coast, with narrow little streets and a serene town square. Then you can either take the bus, or follow the Valle del Dragone (‘Valley of the Dragon’) up to Ravello. The French novelist, André Gide, once described the town as being ‘closer to the sky than the seashore’, and indeed you’ll have to climb a number of steps. Ravello is still one of the most exclusive villages of the Amalfi Coast. You can take your time to stroll through Ravello, before walking back down to the coast, past the dramatically located Villa Cimbrone and the hamlet of Pontone, possibly visiting the Torre dello Zirro, a medieval watchtower dominating the towns of Amalfi and Atrani from above. Then, through the charming village of Pontone itself, you walk into the ‘Valle dei Mulini’, the valley of the mills, with the ruins of Europe’s most ancient paper mills, dating back to the 11th century. The comfortable footpath runs alongside the course of the river, in an abundant, green, almost un-Italian landscape. Those who feel like it can penetrate deep into the valley, through spectacular scenery, underneath the towering cliffs, through an almost fairytale-like landscape. Here you can admire a number of beautiful waterfalls. Then you return back down to Amalfi. The path gradually descends past a number of impressive ruins of what were once the first paper mills, adding a mysterious touch to the landscape. Along the last stretch the scenery changes to lemon groves and maquis. Back down in Amalfi you can visit the paper museum, before settling in at your hotel.

Day 5
Today you make a spectacular roundwalk in one of southern Italy’s most stunning Nature Reserves, the ‘Valle delle Ferriere’ From Amalfi you first take the bus to Scala. From here you first walk to the stunning hamlet of Minuta, from where you have great views over Amalfi, Ravello & Atrani. Then you climb up a flight of stairs and enter the Valle delle Ferriere Nature Reserve. You will see some spectacular scenery, walking over comfortable footpaths underneath the towering cliffs, and passing close to some little waterfalls. Though close to Amalfi, the scenery looks like it belongs to a different world: one of isolated mountains. After crossing the main stream, the path gradually descends through the forest towards the little village of Pogerola, dominating the valley of Amalfi from the west. From here a beautiful medieval mule track curves down to Amalfi, amidst lemon groves and maquis, with nice views over the valley.

Distance: 11 km. Approx. 5 h. walking. Ascent & descent: + 300 m./- 700 m.
Day 6
From Amalfi you take a local bus to the monastery of Santa Rosa, a very scenic drive, which saves you a 300 m. climb uphill / ascend! (there is also the possibility to walk here, partly along the ‘Maestra dei Villaggi’). The walk from here first goes to the charming little village of Conca dei Marini, from where you’ll have wonderful views both on Amalfi and towards the western tip of the peninsula. The route descends to the coast again, and follows the coastline along some charming churches beautifully located above the rocky shore. You now descend into the lower part of the spectacular fjord of Furore, with its charming fishing village underneath the towering limestone cliffs. From here you walk along the church of Sant’Elia into the Valley of Praia, and then to the coastal town Praiano, with an optional descent to the very picturesque inlet of Marina di Praia, the old little harbour of Praiano.

Optional extra day: Into the Green Valley of Praia
From your hotel you walk through the little streets of Praiano, up towards the little church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli. From here on a comfortable path above the village itself, you walk into the Valley of Praia, a beautiful green valley with many vineyards clinged to the cliffs. You then climb up to the little church of Sant’Alfonso and from here the very scenic caves of Santa Barbara: another short section uphill brings you to the beginning of the famous ‘Sentiero degli Dei’ (Footpath of the Gods), a walk with unrivalled views. After a very panoramic stretch with views over the whole Amalfi Coast, reaching out until the island of Capri, you start the descend back to Praiano again, passing over a centuries old staircase. For those who still have some energy a descend to the little inlet ‘Cavitella’ is highly recommended.

Day 7
You start your walk in the picturesque white washed alleys of Praiano. Then, along a medieval pilgrims’ route you walk uphill towards the monastery of San Domenico, set in a stupendous scenery, dominating the coast from its hilltop. Here you can have a little rest before continuing the climb uphill, through spectacular scenery with bizarre rock formations and luxurious vegetation. Shortly you then reach one of Italy’s most famous footpaths, the ‘Sentiero degli Dei’, or ‘Footpath of the Gods’. This path really lives up to its name! Through unique scenery with unrivalled views you reach the hamlet of Nocelle. Passing another spectacular valley you arrive in the little village of Montepertuso. After Montepertuso it’s only a short walk downstairs to Positano itself, one of the most charming villages of the Coast. There is ample to explore or perhaps a swim, before you return by local bus to Praiano, a short, but very scenic drive.

Day 8
After breakfast you return by boat or bus and train to Naples and by shuttle bus to the airport. An extra night in a hotel can be booked upon request.
N.B. It is possible to extend this tour with 2 days in Positano and/or two days in Capri (see tour variations). On request it is also possible to book a night in Positano’s only ‘mountain hut’.
ACCOMMODATION & MEALS
All nights are spent in beautiful, welcoming farm houses (‘agriturismo’), or in small characteristic family-run hotels (generally 3-star). All rooms have en-suite facilities.
Accommodation is on B&B basis, in all accommodations. So no evening meals are included, and you are free to choose from the wide choice of restaurants in the area. Your accommodation holder can give you good tips. On some occasions you can also choose to eat at the premises of the hotel.
No picnic lunches are included in the tour price, but these can be prepared for you by the accommodation holders, or materials for picnics can be purchased in the villages where you stay. On some occasions you have the option to have your lunch in a restaurant along the way.
Night 1 & 2: The first two nights are spent in the small village of Bomerano, on the high plain of Agerola, overlooking the Amalfi Coast, either in a beautiful agriturismo, or at ‘family houses’, all with comfortable rooms with en-suite facilities.
Nights 3, 4 & 5: These are spent at Amalfi, the ancient capital of the Amalfi Coast, in a welcoming and comfortable 3-star hotel, recently renovated, or in a small charming family run hotel right on the (private) beach. All hotels are centrally located at walking distance from the seashore and all main monuments of the medieval town centre.
Nights 6 & 7: The last nights you stay in the little town of Praiano, in a good 3-star hotel, with a few nice little beaches at walking distance. For those who want to relax a day longer, there’s the possibility to stay longer.
LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY
Moderately easy (2-3): Mostly easy walks, but with nonetheless some walking uphill, sometimes on paths with rough surfaces. On some days extensions or shortcuts are possible.
Fitness: High standard of fitness is not necessary but clients should be able to walk for up to 5 hours a day in hot sun on dusty or stony tracks.
FOOTPATHS & WAYMARKING
Footpaths: Most paths are relatively well maintained, but during the season some paths can get overgrown (we are in continuous contact with local authorities to keep the paths clean – please help us by providing you feedback on the quality of the paths).
Waymarking: Only a small part of the route is waymarked (partly by us); elsewhere it is necessary to follow the route descriptions provided together with the maps. With these it is always possible to find your route. In case you don’t feel confident a local guide can be provided for some trails

ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE
Arrival: The tour starts in BOMERANO (AGEROLA), connected with Naples by a frequent bus service. A taxi pick-up service can be arranged either from Naples (airport or train station), or from Pompeii or Castellammare di Stabia, which can both be easily reached from Naples, with the local Circumvesuviana train.
Departure: The tour ends after breakfast on day 8 in PRAIANO. A frequent bus service can bring you to either Sorrento or Amalfi/Salerno, from where you travel to your next destination (Naples, Salerno or Rome can all be easily reached). Several taxi services are available to bring you directly to your next destination.

It is possible to include extra nights in any of the accommodations en route. Descriptions for extra walks as well as sightseeing options will be provided !!!
At the beginning or end of the tour there is also an opportunity to visit Naples and/or Pompeii, or spend some time on the beach.

For those who want to enjoy some real mountain scenery!
Day 1
Arrival in Naples. By local train (optional taxi) you travel to Castellammare di Stabia, on the southern part of the Bay of Naples. From here you travel up with the amazing ‘Funivia’ to the ridge of Mount Faito, one of the world’smost spectacular cable car rides, with sweeping views over the Bay of Naples! Here you settle in your welcoming mountain hotel in the area known as ‘Belvedere’. And indeed, the views on the Bay of Naples are indeed grand to say the least! A must is the short walk to the viewpoint of the ‘Belvedere’, from where you are face to face with the Vesuvius, Sorrento, Capri and the other islands of the Bay of Naples. If you arrive early, you can already go for a longer stroll, and perhaps enjoy the sunset behind the island of Capri. At night you dine on local specialties on the premises of the hotel.
Hotel Sant’Angelo *** – Monte Faito (Castellammare di Stabia)
Day 2
Today’s walk brings you onto the highest peaks of the Sorrento Peninsula, the ridge which separates the Amalfi Coast from the Bay of Naples. The walk brings you through ancient beech & chestnut forests, along several natural springs & caves, and then up to the ridge from where views are even more beautiful than from the famed ‘Sentiero degli Dei’. Of course you climb the highest mountain of the ridge, the impressive Monte Sant’Angelo, towering 1444 m. high in the middle of the two seas. Then you also hit the beautiful Monte Conocchia, with equally beautiful views, especially along the ridge to Capri. The following part of the walk is a relaxed stroll along the ridge down to the plains of the Monte Faito and back through the forest to your hotel.
Hotel Sant’Angelo *** – Monte Faito (Castellammare di Stabia)
Distance: 11,5 km. Approx. 5-6 h. walking. Height gain and loss: 500 m. (several extensions possible)
Day 3
Today you will follow the ‘Alta Via dei Monti Lattari’, the long distance path of the Sorrento Peninsula, in eastern direction. You first pass along the northern side of the highest tops, underneath the impressive towering cliffs, with great views towards Mt. Vesuvius. Then you reach the ridge again and continue along easy paths through chestnut forests, along several natural springs & caves. Then you start descending towards the highplain of Agerola, a beautiful succession of terraces vineyards, orchards and chestnut forests, high above the Amalfi Coast, overlooking the Bay of Salerno. Here you settle in your beautifully located agriturismo, and enjoy a first great meal based on local produce (and then continue the standard programme).

For those who want to enjoy some glamour in the foremost resort town of the Amalfi Coast!
Several hotels in Positano (ranging from 3*** – 5*****) can be booked as an extension to your tour. The program would then be as follows:
Day 7
Directly from your hotel you walk through the little streets of Praiano, up towards the little church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli. Day 8

Day 9
First you take the local bus up to Montepertuso, from where you start a very scenic walk, around the upper valley of Positano. Following ancient footpaths through the forest and along marvelous viewpoints you climb up towards Santa Maria al Castello, the old fortress defending the narrow valley between the Amalfi- and Sorrento-side of the peninsula. From here you can admire both the Gulf of Salerno and the Bay of Naples. Through a nice wooded area in a park like landscape you then descend to the Caserma Forestale (the forestry service’s house). For those who want there is the possibility to climb up from here to the Monte Sant’Angelo, the highest mountain of the peninsula, a very demanding but rewarding ascent. The standard walk though continues through the forest and zigzags back down to Montepertuso. Along another medieval mule track you then return to Positano again.

After breakfast you return by boat or bus and train to Naples and by shuttle bus to the airport. An extra night in a hotel can be booked upon request.
Possible extension n.° 3 : CAPRI
Several hotels in Capri/Anacapri can be booked as an extension to your tour. There are direct boats from Amalfi/Positano to Capri. The program would then be as follows:
Day 8
Today you travel by boat to the rightly famous island of Capri, the island where already the roman emperors liked to come as tourists, and that since then never lost its fame. Upon arrival in the harbour you leave your luggage to the ‘porters’ and start a beautiful roundwalk. Of course you do not only see the ‘touristy’ highlights, but you also walk along wonderful foot paths, passing the ruins of the island’s most impressive roman villa, an untouched coastline and many grotto’s. Along the world famous Via Krupp, you then descend to Marina Piccola, with perhaps the option for a swim, before settling in your hotel. This walk can be extended or shortened in many ways, according to your wish to dedicate to walking, relaxing or shopping. In the evening you’ll have the choice of many romantic restaurants in the village.

Day 9
The last walking day is dedicated to the less famous side of the island of Capri, the more rural and mountainous Anacapri. By chair lift (‘funicolare’) you travel up to the highest mountain of the island, the Mount Solaro (burt also walking is possible). From here you can enjoy marvellous views over the whole island, the Bay of Naples, the Bay of Salerno and the Amalfi Coast. Descending along the ridge you slowly walk down a great foot path to the light house at the very west end of the island. Here you can perhaps enjoy the clear sea water. The walk then continues along the coast, passing along a series of fortresses, partly built by the English troops to defend the island from the fleet of Napoleon, on recently restored. The walk ends at the world famous ‘Blue Grotto’ (the ‘Grotta Azzurra’), from where you travel back by bus to your hotel.
